Grade 9 math is where the gaps show up.
Ontario Grade 9 math is MTH1W, the de-streamed course introduced in 2021. It asks a student to use everything from Grades 5 through 8 at once, and anything that was never solid underneath starts costing marks.
The EQAO Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics counts toward the final course mark for at least 10%, up to a maximum of 30%, with each school board deciding the exact weight.
We find what's underneath, then teach the MTH1W material.
What this is
A twelve-week course in MTH1W. Two live 45-minute sessions a week, small groups.
The twelve weeks starting after Thanksgiving run through to the January assessment window for Semester 1 students. Semester 2 and full-year students write in June. The course teaches the MTH1W material; the assessment is why the term is timed this way.
The first session each week teaches. The second takes up the work — questions, corrections, and the specific places students got stuck.
The twelve weeks
Number sense and operations
Fractions, decimals, integers, ratio and rate. The material Grade 9 assumes and rarely re-teaches.
Algebra
Variables, expressions, solving equations, and what the symbols are actually standing for.
Linear relations
Tables, graphs, equations, slope, and moving between all four without losing the thread.
Practice sets are included and downloadable. Everything is written to MTH1W.
Price
$529 if paid upfront — saves $68.
Founding rate: first 30 students at $149 a month, locked for as long as the student stays with us.
Classes are capped at 10 students. Two live 45-minute sessions a week for twelve weeks.
That covers 24 live sessions and all materials.
Groups run with a minimum of 4 students. If a group doesn't reach 4, you don't pay.
What we don't say
We won't tell you your child's mark will go up by a certain amount, and we don't promise an EQAO score. We don't know that, and neither does anyone who tells you otherwise.
We also won't compare your child to a class average or a grade-level norm. What we'll tell you is specific: here is the idea they're working from, here is where it came from, here is what we're teaching next.
Classes begin after Thanksgiving.
Tell us your child's grade and we'll send you the schedule and payment details. Sending this does not charge anything. Payment is arranged directly.
